HYDERABAD: M S Reddy, the co-pilot who lost his life on board the chief minister’s chopper Bell 430 was given a hero’s welcome when his body
Pilots
arrived in the city on Thursday. Hundreds of locals gathered around the residence of Capt M S Reddy at Ashoka Satyam Enclave, DD Colony in Nallakunta.
M S Reddy is survived by his wife and two children who were inconsolable ever since news of the chopper’s crash broke. M S Reddy’s daughter Manusri a class VIII student , son Vinay Kumar Reddy and father Sriram Reddy cried bitterly when the dead body arrived in the house. His wife, Kirnamai, broke down on seeing her husband’s body.
“My son was a good sportsman and football player. I cannot believe that he died in an air crash. He touched my feet and took blessings everyday and never left the house without saying goodbye to me. But on Wednesday, I wasn’t home and he left without seeing me,” the pilot’s father Sriram Reddy said.
Vinay, an Inter second year student at Narayana junior college too is now clinging on to a brief moment when he saw his father on Wednesday morning before he left home. “I woke up early on Wednesday because I had an exam but I never thought this would be the last time I saw him,” said Vinay .
Friends and relatives visited M S Reddy’s residence and made funeral arrangements, in sharp contrast to the fun celebration they had arranged last week. “Last week, we celebrated a get-together as one of our friends was leaving for the US,’’ said G Damodar Reddy, M S Reddy’s childhood friend. Another friend, B Gopalkrishna, who is a scientist at DRDO, recalled how his pilot friend stood for “discipline and courage’’.
“I was confident that he would survive because he has even been to Siachen Glacier. He won two certificates for the meritorious service he rendered during the earthquake in Srinagar. He had himself picked up hundreds of people trapped under the debris during the earthquake,’’ said Giridhar, M S Reddy’s friend.
The funeral will take place at his native place in Nalgonda district on Saturday. By then his US-based brother M V Ramana Reddy too would have arrived from New York.
Meanwhile, friends poured into the residence of pilot Group Captain S K Bhatia at Yapral, Secunderabad, where his family members did not aloow media persons inside. His dead body was shifted from the airport to the Military Hospital in Secunderabad.
“The body will be shifted to his residence on Friday morning. He was a native of Delhi, and his funeral is likely to take place on Friday or Saturday,” Wing Commander D S Gill, a close friend of S K Bhatia said.

EC urged not to use EVMs for GHMC polls

HYDERABAD: Reiterating that EVMs (electronic voting machines) can be tampered, the Jana Chaitanya Vedika and TDP on Thursday urged the Election
Commission not to use these machines in the GHMC elections unless all doubts are cleared.
The organisation wanted the EC to develop a verification tool, which can check the programme authenticity inside the chip.
While the TDP delegation led by N Janardhan Reddy called on the state election commissioner and submitted a letter written by party president N Chandrababu Naidu urging him to re-introduce ballot papers in the GHMC polls, JCV president V Lakshman Reddy at a media conference said that the people who come to vote should know to whom their vote had been cast.
He said that EC should either follow the procedure of issuing a printout of the vote cast or should go with the ballot papers. NetIndia, organisation associated with the JCV, prepared model EVMs based on the proforma of the EVMs of EC and demonstrated as to how the machine can be tampered.
Hari K Prasad, MD of NetIndia, said the biggest flaw in the EVMs used by the EC is that if the machine cables of two EVMs (assembly and Parliament) are swapped the result will be different. He said the chip used by the EC is made by government companies, which "can be managed.'' "If the EC can give us information about the chip programming then they can analyse and show how the EVMs can be tampered."
Prasad said the machines can be manipulated even at the time of activation. Giving an example, he said a programme can be set like ten per cent more votes for the candidate for whom first 20 votes were cast and the candidate can send those first 20 people to the booth and make them stand in queue ahead of others.
The TDP demanded that usage of the EVMs be temporarily suspended till all the doubts about their genuineness are cleared.

The ICICI assistant manager had taken Rs one crore to help his associates in hassle-free withdrawal of cash and Mohan Prakash was one of the persons who went to withdraw the money.
