Jan. 3: Following the recommendations of the Centre, the system of shift courts (special magistrate's courts) will be introduced in the state to help expedite the disposal of cases. The AP High Court is making arrangements to establish 140 shift courts across the state. These courts will function in morning and evening sessions to dispose of special cases that are allocated to them.

The recommendation to have such courts across the country was made by the Justice V. S. Malimath Committee on Reforms of the Criminal Justice System. Such courts are already functioning in Delhi and Gujarat. Sources in the High Court Registry told this correspondent that the shift courts will be presided over by retired judicial officers and they have to try and dispose of civil, criminal cases, triable by junior civil judge/judicial magistrate of the first class court. “The evening courts shall endeavour to dispose of the matters by way of settlement/trial, preferably within three months”, sources added.

According to official sources the Presiding Officer will be paid a consolidated amount of Rs 40,000 per month and the court is likely to start functioning from March.
