Naidu becomes pro-farmer
GUNTUR: Chandrababu Naidu wants to fight for the farmers till his last breath. In a major shift from his tech-savvy image when he was the CM for nine years, the TDP president now promises to set up a separate fund for farmers and their welfare if his party is elected to power.
Taking an emotional oath in the presence of national leaders like Prakash Karat, Ajith Singh, Deve Gowda and Om Prakash Choutala, Naidu said he would not rest till the government alleviates the problems of the farmers. He asked the farmers not to enter their fields till cultivation is made profitable by the government.
He said the Guntur meeting would be historical and set the tone for their united fight for farmers' issues at the national level in the coming days. Addressing a huge public meeting at the Rythu Kosam pranganam at Ambedkar stadium here on Thursday, Naidu took a leaf out of Jaganmohan Reddy's book by stressing that no government would survive if it ignored the farmers. He demanded that the Congress MPs quit their posts in support of ryots."Unfortunately, both the governments in the state and the Centre are unsympathetic towards the farmers," he said.
He also said that prices of all the agriculture produce must be fixed by adding at least 50 per cent profit to the input costs. "I have no words to explain the distress of the farmers. They have lost everything in the continuous cyclones and untimely rains," he said. Lashing out at the Kiran Kumar Reddy government, Naidu asked as to why the Congress MPs did not fast for the cause of farmers when they could do undertake fast for the T-agitators.
He said the Union government headed by Manmohan Singh allowed a loot of Rs 1.76 lakh crore of exchequer through the 2G spectrum allocation but did not respond to grant Rs 5,000 crore for the farmers of rain-ravaged Andhra Pradesh. He said that the farmer was not in a position to recover unless he was granted Rs 10,000 per acre compensation for paddy, Rs 15,000 for chilli and Rs 30,000 for tobacco barn.
Without referring to the names of YSR family, Naidu alleged that huge public money was siphoned off by a few families to set up newspapers and television channels. He held the Congress government solely responsible for the state losing the crucial battle on the Krishna water sharing issue.
He said the Krishna Water Tribunal Award would wreak havoc on the irrigation projects in the state and leave the fields barren in five districts which depend heavily on Krishna waters. He said that they would chalk out a course of action on the Krishna Water Tribunal Award issue.
