Price rise leaves students in 6,080 hostels hungry

Dec. 26: The steep rise in the prices of essential commodities has made things very difficult for nearly seven lakh students residing in 6,080 government welfare hostels in the state. With the government giving just about Rs 5.50 per day for each student, the hostel authorities are struggling to meet the “menu” drafted by the officials.

With not enough food being available, many students have left their studies mid-way and have returned to their native places. Several BC, SC and ST unions are planning to hold a ‘hunger rally’ in front of the Chief Minister’s camp office next week to demand an increase in mess charges.

“On an average, the government gives Rs 5.30 per day for each student up to Class VII; Rs 5.85 for each student up to Class X; and Rs 5.77 for every college student. It has designed a breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner menu that includes egg, milk and raagi malt every day. How it is possible to serve three meals in less than Rs 6?” said Mr R. Krishnaiah, president, AP BC Welfare Association. He said the monthly mess charge in prisons is Rs 1,300 per prisoner.
