Party cadres split into batches in Adilabad in a bid to keep the police on bandobast duty guessing
TDP activists gather on the old highway at Collectorate Chowk in Adilabad at 5 a.m.
Police make tight security arrangements as a precautionary measure in Nizamabad
ADILABAD: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists on Thursday staged ‘rasta rokos' in Adilabad town where they had formed batches to keep the police on bandobast duty guessing.
They had apparently devised a strategy to negate the effect on their agitation that would have occurred due to police taking them into custody after a few minutes of protest.
The first batch comprising a handful of partymen was on to the old highway in town at the Collectorate Chowk as early as 5 a.m. though there was hardly any traffic to be stopped at that time.
Many workers in bullock carts at about 10.30 a.m. led by Adilabad MLA Jogu Ramanna stopped vehicular movement on the four-lane highway at the Mavala junction.
While this group was taken into custody after about 30 minutes of protest, another batch halted flow of traffic at the Chanda (T) junction. In all, the activists staged ‘rasta rokos' seven times during the day.
At mandal headquarters
Telugu Desam Party and Left cadres participated in the agitational programme at all mandal headquarters in the district too.
Though for short durations, they hindered movement of traffic in support of their fasting president N. Chandrababu Naidu.
KARIMNAGAR: Traffic came to a grinding halt for several hours in various parts of the district following the road blockade organised by the cadres of the Telugu Desam and Left parties in Karimnagar district on Thursday.
In Karimnagar, local legislator G. Kamalakar along with his supporters squatted on the road at Alugunur crossroads obstructing traffic towards Hyderabad, Warangal and Ramagundam regions.
They set fire to some old tyres and obstructed the traffic. Telugu Desam Party leaders also staged ‘rasta rokos' at Huzurabad, and Peddapalli also.
NIZAMABAD: Telugu Desam Party and Left party cadres lay siege to the National Highway-7 and the National Highway-16 affecting movement of vehicular traffic from Bhiknoor to Sone Bridge and to Kammarpally.
They continued the agitation for about one hour.
As a result, hundreds of vehicles were stranded on either side of the roads.
Telugu Desam Party workers participated in the ‘rasta rokos' in large numbers and lay siege to two important roads passing through the district at Bhiknoor, Kamareddi, Dichpalli, Jakranpalli, Balkonda, Morthad and Kammarpalli.
They also staged dharnas in Nizamabad and Armoor towns. The police took into custody about 30 Telugu Desam Party cadres and set them free after execution of personal bonds. The police made tight security arrangements as a precautionary measure.
Scores arrested
SANGAREDDY: Traffic came to standstill at many places in the district as Telugu Desam Party cadres staged ‘rasta rokos' responding to the call given by the party leadership.
Highways blocked
At many places party workers sat on the road blocking traffic including the National Highway 9, National Highway 7, Rajiv-Rahadari and the Nanded-Akola Road.
Police arrested scores of Telugu Desam Party workers and released them by the evening. Traffic was halted at Patancheru, Sangareddy, Sadasivapet, Kohir, Zaheerabad, Toopran, Ramayampet, Chegunta, Narayanakhed and other areas.
Workers of Left parties too joined the Telugu Desam Party in the protest.
