Hyderabad, Feb 3 : The Praja Rajyam Party today apparently moved a step further towards merger with the ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh with majority of the leaders preferring an amalgamation over a poll tie-up.

Majority of the PRP leaders, including MLAs, who had a one-on-one meeting with their president K Chiranjeevi till late in the evening, were said to have favoured amalgamation of the party with the Congress rather than an electoral tie-up in "long-term interests."

Earlier, a meeting of party MLAs, Political Affairs Committee (PAC) members and district unit presidents adopted a resolution authorising Chiranjeevi to take an "appropriate decision" when he meets Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.

Their meeting, at her invitation, is expected to take place on February 7, PRP sources said.

For the record, PRP's PAC member and former MP C Ramachandraiah said the party has decided to "work together" with the Congress to achieve its objective of social justice.

"Since the PRP does not have the strength of its own to realise the objective of social justice and uplift the downtrodden, we have resolved to join hands with the Congress," he told newsmen after the meeting of party MLAs and senior leaders here this afternoon.

He, however, did not specify if working together with the Congress meant a merger. "We have authorised our president to take an appropriate decision," Ramachandraiah said.

The former MP said Chiranjeevi will meet Sonia without any pre-conditions since the Congress has made any offer.

"After the meeting between the two leaders, we all will meet here again and take a final decision," he added.

Chiranjeevi today had one-on-one interaction with PRP MLAs and senior leaders to seek their views on the course to be adopted vis--vis the Congress.

It was here that they reportedly spoke in favour of the PRP's merger with the Congress, a PAC member said.

"Some leaders informed Chiranjeevi about opposition to merger from Congress rank and file in some districts like East Godavari and Krishna. In Vijayawada city, the Congress leaders are vehemently opposing either merger or a tie-up. Our president assured everyone that he will consider their views seriously and take the right decision in the interest of all," the PAC member said.
